How We Tested It

My partner and I spent over two months testing the Beautyrest to ensure we could fully evaluate all features of this mattress. We have two very different sleeping styles, body types and sleeping concerns, so we really felt the range of the mattress’s motion transfer, temperature control, support and comfort.

Motion Transfer

As someone who frequently tosses and turns in my sleep, one of the first features I look for in a mattress is low motion transfer. With my previous mattress, I was frequently woken up when my pets jumped on and off the bed, and my poor partner was up and down with my constant movement.

The Beautyrest Black provided us with more relief than I expected for a hybrid mattress. In my experience, mattresses with coils, even hybrids, tend to do pretty poorly in this category, but Beautyrest’s Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil Technology is surprisingly good.

While the hybrid nature of this mattress means it will have more motion transfer than a full memory foam mattress, Beautyrest’s patented coils and use of gel and memory foam within its comfort layers reduce motion more than a standard coil bed. These features allow me, my partner and even our dog to sleep undisturbed for the majority of the night.

Temperature Control

The Beautyrest Black mattress has special Sleep Climate Technology and Micro Diamond Memory Foam, which are meant to help with temperature control, especially for those who sleep hot (like me)—and it shows. There’s a significant difference between the heat retention of the Beautyrest mattress and the other mattress in our home. I noticed it the very first night.

My dog enjoys “warming up” my spot in bed, which, while cute, means I normally start my night off hotter than I’d like to be. While there was the slightest warmth to the bed when my dog begrudgingly moved, it was much cooler than usual. Throughout my time sleeping on this mattress, I’ve woken up feeling warm less often, which is a godsend during the grueling East Coast summer.

Pressure Relief and Support

As a person with chronic back pain, pressure relief and support are paramount in my search for a good mattress. I tend to sleep in all positions depending on how my spine is feeling on any given night, and I’ve found that other mattresses are only good for certain types of sleepers.

Outside corners on dormers needs special flashing details to prevent water leaks. This article explains two foolproof methods for making sure that corners shed water and stay dry for the life of the roof.

Wrapped Corner Method

There are two good ways to handle corner flashing. The first — bending two pieces and caulking the joint — is the most common because you can do it immediately with the flashing at hand. If you bend crisp corners and nail carefully, you’ll only leave a tiny hole to caulk at the corner.

Remember to place the flashing under the weather barrier on the dormer. If you’re flashing a masonry chimney, nail the flashing to the roof as far up the flashing as possible. Cap flashing (counter flashing) inserted into mortar joints will cover the top edge.

Bend a flap down

Run the base flashing 4 to 5 in. beyond the dormer and cut the top section along the dormer edge. Bend the flap down and nail along the top edge.

Notch the step flashing

Notch the first step flashing, leaving a 1-in. flap to bend around the front of the dormer. Nail along its upper edge. Add shingles and additional step flashing.

Caulk

Squeeze a thin bead of caulk over the leftover gap and along the bottom joint.

Soldered Corner Method

The second, forming and soldering a custom piece to fit the corner, is the best because it doesn’t leave any potential leak spots (at the caulked gaps). Unfortunately, you can’t solder aluminum flashing, and soldering galvanized steel is difficult. You’ll have to measure your roof slope and have a sheet metal or gutter-making shop make one for you. You may have to nail the lower edge to the roof to hold it flat. If so, cover the nail head with a dab of silicone.

Lay soldered corner flashing around the corner and over the base flashing. Nail the flashing to the dormer near the top edge and continue with the shingles and step flashing.

Metal roofing systems you can install yourself are readily available, but you need to feel comfortable working with metal and with investing more upfront for materials. You’ll see some savings in the long run, so the cost will eventually balance itself out. The only specialty tool you’ll need for installation is a locking sheet metal tool, which is available at roofing suppliers or online.

Metal roofs are fire-resistant, so you may earn a discount on your homeowner’s insurance. They also look nice—which can improve curb appeal—and melting snow easily slides off, eliminating the extra weight on the roof. All in all, installing metal roofing is a sound investment for your home.

Metal roofs can be special-ordered in various colors at lumberyards and roof supply companies. Edco (shown in the photo) and Tamko both make interlocking metal roofing panels that you can install with clips and roofing nails. The systems have specially designed starter strips, valleys, gable trim flashing and flashing for dormers, chimneys and skylights. Each panel interlocks with the underlying and adjacent panels or with the flashing.

Manufacturers say homeowners’ most common questions are about the potential for noise. Don’t worry; rain hitting a metal roof won’t be noticeably louder than rain on an asphalt roof, so you don’t need to worry about stormy nights becoming a nuisance.

Metal Shingle Roof Cost

Metal roofs cost about $250 per square (1 square = 100 square feet). If you plan to install the metal roofing yourself, the average roof would cost about $4,000. This is significantly less than hiring a contractor to install three-tab shingles. And while the price of materials is six times as much as low-end three-tab asphalt shingles, which start at $35 to $40 per square, metal roofs last 50 years or more, so you won’t have to worry about reroofing.

I love the look of stainless steel appliances, but keeping them shining can be a bit of a hassle, especially since I tend to bump into them with abrasive objects. In fact, the first time I tried to remove scratches from stainless steel, I only made them worse by using a too-rough cleaning pad.

But now that I know the proper technique and materials to use, most scratches are actually pretty simple to mitigate. Below is some advice for doing just that, collected from five experts.

• Note: Some stainless steel is clear-coated, especially panels that are fingerprint-resistant. For those, check your owner’s manual for additional precautions and advice.

Can Scratches Be Removed From Stainless Steel?

Sometimes, scratches can be removed from stainless steel. Shallow scratches can be buffed out or minimized in appearance, but deeper ones might be a lost cause.

How to Remove Scratches From Stainless Steel

Non-Abrasive Cleaners

There are a range of non-abrasive cleaners and kits specifically made to buff scratches out of stainless steel. To use these:

• Apply the cleaner to a clean microfiber or other soft cloth.
• Gently buff the surface in the direction of the grain. Repeat as needed.
• Wipe with a damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth.
• Follow any manufacturer instructions and precautions.

“Be sure to move the pad in the direction of the grain as you work over the deep grooves to fill them in,” says Fahad Javaid, General Manager at Zanduco Restaurant Equipment Supply. “Although larger projects may take some time, avoid using circular motions, as this could cause discoloration on the appliance.”

Pros and Cons of Non-Abrasive Cleaners

Since these products are made specifically for stainless steel, this is the preferred method for regular maintenance and treating scratches, says Alicia Sokolowski, President of AspenClean. But they are more expensive than home remedies.

Scratch Removal Kits

For deeper scratches, several of our experts recommended Scratch-B Gone or Scratch Pro scratch removal kits, which come with polishing compounds and sanding disks of various grains. Be sure to follow any instructions included with the kit.

Pros and Cons of Scratch Removal Kits

“It removes both light and deeper scratches and restores shine, but it also requires time and effort and may not be effective in removing all kinds of scratches,” says Shlomo Cherniak, owner of Cherniak Home Services.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste is a popular DIY fix. This method is best for very fine scratches and routine upkeep, says Sokolowski, but not as good for deep or widespread scratches.

• Choose a non-gel, not-whitening toothpaste.
• Put a small amount on a soft cloth, then gently rub it over the scratch.
• Always follow the grain of the steel.
• Rinse with water, then dry with a soft, clean cloth.

First, try it out on a small, inconspicuous area to make sure it won’t do more harm than good on your particular surface. “A lot of people recommend a combination of toothpaste and olive oil, but I’ve found this to cause more scratches,” says Delah Gomasi, Managing Director at MaidForYou.

Baking Soda Paste

The light abrasiveness of baking soda makes it another popular DIY fix for removing scratches from stainless steel. To use it:

• Combine equal parts baking soda and water to form a thick paste.
• Rub the paste gently into the scratch along the grain, applying light pressure.
• Rinse the area with water to remove excess paste, then dry with a soft cloth.

“This method is eco-friendly, gentle on surfaces and cost-effective,” says Sokolowski. But, “It requires patience and may not work on deep scratches.”

Alternatively, you can use a non-gel toothpaste mixed with baking soda and water to make the paste, says Javaid.

Olive Oil or Vinegar

For a quick, temporary fix, Sokolowski recommends trying olive oil or vinegar.

• Wipe the stainless-steel surface with a damp cloth to remove dirt.
• Dampen another clean cloth with olive oil or vinegar and rub it into the scratch along the grain or in a circular motion.
• Wipe away any excess oil or vinegar using another clean, dry cloth.

This is a quick-and-easy eco-friendly method that leaves a natural shine, but it only masks the scratches, rather than removing them, and only works for lightly scratched areas, says Sokolowski.

Fine-Grit Sandpaper

Fine-grit sandpaper is often Gomasi’s go-to fix when his teams scratch stainless steel appliances. “To buff out the scratches, we usually use 800-grit sandpaper and lightly scrub in line with the grain,” he says. “You’ll need to do this for the entire stainless steel surface.

Javaid says 400-grit sandpaper soaked in water can also work, but cautions that with any sandpaper method, you run the risk of scratching it further.

New Panels

When scratches are too deep to be removed from stainless steel surfaces, the best solution is to replace the panel or part of the appliance that has scratches, says Gomasi.

What NOT to Do to Remove Stainless Steel Scratches

• Do not use abrasive pads, such as steel wool or hard-plastic brushes, as they can cause more scratches.
• Do not rub against the grain or in a circular motion, which can also cause additional damage.
• Stay away from chlorine-based cleaners, which can damage the finish.
• Do not apply heavy pressure, which can create new scratches or deepen existing ones.
• Do not use a dirty or old cleaning cloth, as it might contain particles that cause scratches.

How to Prevent Scratches on Stainless Steel

Regular cleaning and polishing are important to maintain your stainless steel, and they will hide many minor scuffs and scratches.

• Use clean, soft cloths, like microfiber or soft cotton, and polish with the grain.
• Dry immediately. “Water spots can contribute to scratches, so dry your stainless steel appliances after cleaning,” says Ross Pascale, director at Neeet House Cleaning Services.
• Use coasters and trivets, and avoid touching the surface with sharp or abrasive objects.
• Place magnetic, felt or rubber pads under appliances to prevent scratches from shifting.
• Stay away from abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads.
• Don’t use chlorine-based cleaners, which can all dull the finish.
• If your appliance didn’t come with a coating, treat your stainless steel with an aftermarket protective film.

Don’t rush cleaning. “Let cleaning solutions or a baking soda and vinegar mixture sit on any charred food or residue,” says Javaid. “After the solution has had time to work, you can easily wipe away the grime without risking scratches.”

“For polishing WD-40 is more effective, while toothpaste is best for very light scratches,” says Cherinak.

From the early pioneer’s horse-drawn stagecoaches to today’s decked-out pickups (which may never carry anything more than passengers or groceries from the supermarket), we love our trucks. Whether trucks are used as daily drivers, outdoor adventure (camping, hunting, fishing, antiquing) or hauling tools, people and supplies to worksites, they are engrained into many of our everyday lives. The new Tesla Cybertruck (plus 2,000,000 new picks sold in 2023) is a testimony to this.

Feedback from conversations with two knowledgeable sales reps helped me craft my overall view to answer the question, whether a Tesla Cybertruck is a good work truck.

A couple of caveats:

• Although the regional Tesla dealership I visited had a Cybertruck on the showroom floor, I could not road-test it. (Note: Everything Cybertruck, from scheduling a road test to purchasing one, is done strictly online.)
• Since the truck has only been out for around six months, there is no quality, reliability or crash test data to assess this new vehicle completely.

Cybertruck Bed Size vs. Standard Short and Long Bed Pickups

A typical standard short bed on a four-door crew cab pickup is approximately 70 inches (63 cu. ft. of storage), while the longer bed is approximately 80 inches (72 cu. ft.). The short bed on a traditional two-door pickup is approximately 80 inches (72 cu. ft.), and the long bed 99 inches (82 cu. ft.).

The four-door Cybertruck cargo bed is 73 inches long and has additional storage compartments and a weather-tight hidden cargo space, for a total storage space of 67cu.ft.

How Much Can a Cybertruck Haul?

A Cybertruck’s payload rating is 2,500 lbs. As with any vehicle, never exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Curb Weight (the total mass of a vehicle with all necessary operating fluids and without passengers or cargo).

Cybertruck Towing Capacity

The Cybertruck has an excellent towing capacity of 11,000 lbs.

How Much Does a Cybertruck Cost?

As of this writing, the currently available Foundation model list price for Tesla’s Cybertruck is $99,990. In addition to an optional range extender battery, there are several options you can add, including a spare tire with a tool kit, air compressor, and jump seats.

If you’re going to use a Cybertruck as a work truck, an external tailgate and bumper cover protect the body from damage. Roof rack crossbars for carrying ladders or supplies and a tailgate ramp are options to consider.

Cybertrucks cost compared to other new pickups:

The Cyber truck is priced similarly with comparable new fully loaded EV quarter-ton rated pickups:

• 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Series starts at approximately $88,000.
• 2025 Rivian R1S starts at $89,000.
• 2024 GMC Denali e4WH has a list price of $99, 495, said Ben Shoolin, Buick/GMC Mark of Excellence Sales and Leasing Specialist.
• 2025 GMC Hummer EV 2X e4WD has a list price of $98,845. Shoolin added that adding several classic General Motors options and accessories can place the list price of the Hummer EV 3X Edition at well over $140,000.

Is the Cybertruck a Good Work Truck?

Even with the caveats, if you want to spend $100,000 on a Cybertruck, and based on Consumer Reports Tesla new car reliability, my gut says yes, it will make a good work truck. I was seriously impressed with the Cybertruck I looked at, touched and sat in. It was solid as a rock. The size, fit and finish, in my opinion, were spot on.

There are some cons, such as limited visibility, but the six external cameras and all-wheel steering (AKA “crab-walk”) would make moving around a work site safer and easier.

As a Tesla sales rep described, the 20 in. tires, the armor plate protecting the battery against damage from rocks and debris when driving through rough terrain and different off-road modes (including one mode that employs an adaptive air suspension raising the suspension and pressurizes the high-voltage battery to prevent water intrusion when driving through shallow water) all reduce the possibility of damaging the battery and undercarriage when driving around a work or construction site.

Currently, Tesla does not offer a way to mount snowplowing equipment or a bed cab for additional storage, but I did find a few sites online that offer unique and functional accessories to nicely outfit the Cybertruck as a work truck. The Cybertruck comes standard with exceptional towing and load ratings, the ability to power your home or power tools, and all the refinements, essentials and qualities you want and expect in any decent work truck.

Can you avoid tearing off your old asphalt shingle roof by putting a steel roof over it? Maybe. Most codes now allow no more than two layers of roofing before requiring a complete tear-off. So, if your roof has two layers, it may require a complete tear-off, even though steel is lighter than asphalt. What’s Involved in How to Install Metal Roofing

A steel roof is a lifetime investment, lasting 50 years or more if it’s a good one. Asphalt roofs typically last 20 to 30 years, depending on the installation and shingle quality. So, the investment might be worth it, but the range of choices makes shopping for a steel roofing system more complicated than you might think.

If you want to install steel over asphalt, your best choice for installing metal roofing is to use a steel shingle system like the one shown instead of the more common (and more expensive) standing seam steel. In a standing seam roof, long, single panels run vertically all the way from the eave to the ridge. In contrast, steel shingles are small panels installed in horizontal rows much like other shingles.

Better steel shingle systems, like the one shown, are installed over a framework of 2x2s. This framework has three big advantages. First, because the frame is screwed directly to the rafters and the interlocked shingles are screwed to the frame, the roof can withstand winds of up to 120 mph without damage. Second, the frame creates a flat and straight surface even when the shingles are badly curled or the roof ridge is bowed.

Finally, the frame creates a ventilation gap that helps prevent ice dams in the winter and cools the roof and the house in the summer. To vent the roof, holes are cut in the old roof above the soffit, which pulls air through the soffit vents underneath. Cool outside air then travels under the shingles to the vented ridge, pulling out moisture and heat.

Steel roofs can be noisy and unattractive in residential settings. However, if the steel roof is installed over an existing asphalt roof, noise shouldn’t be a problem. And, as you can see from the photos, if you pick a good-looking style from the many choices available, your house definitely won’t look like a cattle barn.

A steel roof is expensive, but if it lasts the life of your home, it might be worth it. The type we show here costs about twice as much to have installed as a new asphalt roof. However, some steel shingle manufacturers offer do-it-yourself systems that cost about the same as an installed asphalt roof for those who want to learn how to install a metal roof on their own. Both devices can function with a proprietary mobile app and provide additional functions like distance measuring, multiple measurements, data-point storage, and area and volume calculations.

The Leica offers a Pythagoras function and a 60-second timer delay option. However, Bosch’s MeasureOn app is free to use, while Leica’s requires a paid subscription. The MeasureOn app from Bosch is more functional, too. Our testers discovered some connectivity troubles with the Leica app as well.

Additionally, the Leica tool is more costly, retailing for $199 against Bosch’s $119 price tag.

Final Verdict

While the two Bosch laser measuring tools we tested are very different from each other based on functionality, both impressed our testing team for performing well in compact, well-designed and easy-to-operate forms.

The lower-cost choice will best serve DIYers looking for a basic tool to make measuring distances easier than with a standard tape measure. The tool can also be a supplemental device for quick measurements and layouts.

I’m a troubled sleeper who often suffers from insomnia, frequent wakings with trouble falling back asleep and tossing and turning. The Silk & Snow mattress has a latex layer instead of memory foam. This layer doesn’t cradle the body like memory foam but instead provides a firmer bounce that’s durable and breathable. According to Gunther, latex isn’t heat-activated and reacts faster than memory foam, which relies on heat to activate and contour to the body.

How We Tested It

The Silk & Snow organic mattress arrived in a tall, slender box that was ripped at both ends. As soon as I grabbed the box to move it inside, I understood why the box looked like it had been dragged from the delivery truck. It felt lined-with-bricks heavy. To say it was awkward and sweat-inducing to heave it inside the front door may be an understatement. I enlisted help from a male neighbor to carry it upstairs and even tweaked my knee during transport (ouch).

Once upstairs, unwrapped, and propped on the edge of the bed frame, however, it popped open and plopped itself in place. It didn’t need any time to inflate and had no odors. The mattress comes with reinforced handles on both sides, a thoughtful detail that makes it breezy to flip the mattress and lift it (once unwrapped, that is) for sheet fitting. One aesthetic oddity: It doesn’t quite fit my queen-sized bed frame corner to corner. You get a peek-a-boo view of the wooden slats of the bed frame if you look closely, even though the mattress is queen-sized.

I noticed a positive difference in my neck and shoulder pain after the first night of sleep. After 30 days, I’m amazingly pain-free in my neck and shoulders when I wake up, despite spending hours a day hunched over a laptop. I also feel generally less creaky and achy when I get out of bed. Even with the plush pillow top, the mattress is relatively firm and holds its shape versus cocooning you. I think this support is key to alleviating pain.

I was skeptical at first of how comfortable I’d feel (temperature-wise) when trying this mattress. I tend to be a warm sleeper and always need to have at least one foot poking out of the covers. I wasn’t sure how well the organic cotton and wool would regulate my body temperature, as I tend to buy mattresses and pillows with cooling features. I tested this mattress in the middle of summer, and have no air conditioning and only a fan. Granted, I live in temperate San Diego, where it’s rare to have nighttime temperatures above the mid-70s, but I was pleasantly surprised to note that I didn’t feel too warm while sleeping and didn’t wake up sweaty once.

I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the Silk & Snow organic mattress eliminated my neck and shoulder pain. I thought I preferred a softer mattress, but the support this mattress provides, combined with the eco and health certifications, makes it a winner if you can swing the cost.

One important piece of advice, though. If you’re going to buy a hybrid mattress for added support and pressure point relief, Gunther suggests putting the mattress on an adequate base, ideally an orthopedic foundation made of solid wood with a euro-slatted design. “One of the main things that is critical in helping a mattress to perform well (providing the needed comfort and support) is to be certain the foundation below the mattress is strong enough,” he says.

To remove the outer cabinet from this type of washer, first pull off the side trim pieces and remove the retaining screws. Flip the console up and release the spring clips with a screwdriver. Tilt the cabinet forward and lift the cabinet off.

Maytag Washer Repair

To remove the front panel on this type of washer, yank the bottom of the panel outward (you may have to first remove screws). Pull the panel down and out.

Common Washer Machine Problems

Grinding Noise

If you own a Whirlpool direct-drive washer (the water hoses attach to the left side when viewed from the back), you’ve probably got a broken coupler—a common failure caused by overloading the machine. It’s an easy and inexpensive fix.

Pop the snap retainers with a screwdriver and pull the pump off the motor shaft. Then disconnect the electrical connectors from the motor. Pop the bottom retainer off the motor and prop up the motor while you pop the top retainer (it’s heavy). Pry the broken coupler pieces off the motor and transmission. Tap the new coupler into place with a wooden block.

Draining Problems

When clothing or jewelry gets stuck in the hose to the pump or the pump itself, the machine won’t drain, and you might hear squealing, grinding or smell burning rubber. First, remove the stuck hose that goes from the tub to the pump (drain the water into a bowl) and check for stuck socks (yes, that’s where they go). Then, run a coat hanger through the tube and pull out the stuck objects. Next, check the pump for broken blades by shaking it.

Rotate the pump shaft to make sure it spins freely. Replace the pump if you find any damage. If you see any burned or melted sections on the belts, replace them. Maytag belts are specially designed, so don’t substitute an ordinary “V” belt.

Slow Fill or No Fill

If your washing machine fills slowly or won’t fill at all, try cleaning the inlet screens on the water valve. If that doesn’t help, replace the entire water valve assembly.

Won’t Agitate or Spin

If the machine fills with water and then just sits there, suspect a broken lid switch. To test the switch, you’ll need a continuity tester or a multimeter. Remove the wires connected to the switch and touch the tester’s probes to the switch’s connectors. As you open and close the lid, readings should alternate between continuity and no continuity. If not, replace the switch.

To replace the switch on a Whirlpool-type washer, just remove the two screws and screw in the new one. To get at the switch on a Maytag-type washer, you’ll have to unscrew the access panel behind the console and replace the switch as shown here. Remember to raise the lid before you remove the old switch.

• Tip: Never drop a washing machine’s lid! Slamming the lid eventually wrecks the lid switch.
