If you recently bought your child Red Toolbox’s Stanley Jr. Kids Wheelbarrow and 7-piece Garden Set from Costco, you need to be aware of an important recall so you can take immediate action to ensure your family’s safety if you’re impacted. On Sept. 12, Red Toolbox announced that two items in the Stanley Jr. Kids Wheelbarrow and 7-piece Garden Set pose a lead poisoning hazard.

Here, we’ll explain which products are affected, the reason for the recall, how to check if your product is part of the recall, and what steps you should take if you own a recalled item.

Which Red Toolbox Products Are Recalled?

The recall affects the long hoe and rake in the Stanley Jr. Kids Wheelbarrow and 7-piece Garden Set, model number 1662178. The items have yellow-painted wooden handles marked with the words Stanley Jr. in black.

The set, which is designed to let kids take part in everyday gardening activities, also includes the following items (though these items are not being recalled):

  • Wheelbarrow
  • Apron
  • Gloves
  • Hand tools

Over 450,000 sets sold in the U.S. (and about 60,000 in Canada) are impacted by the recall. Again, only the long hoe and rake have been flagged for recall due to safety concerns.

Why Are These Red Toolbox Products Recalled?

The recall of the Stanley Jr. Wheelbarrow and 7-piece Garden Set was initiated because the long hoe and rake contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead paint ban, posing a lead poisoning hazard.

Although no injuries have been reported, these tools could pose a hazard during use, particularly for young children. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause health issues.

How Do I Know If Red Toolbox Product Is Recalled?

To verify whether your Stanley Jr. Kids Wheelbarrow and Garden Set is part of the recall, check the following:

  • Model Number: Look for model number 1662178 on the product packaging or receipt.
  • Manufacturing Date: The affected sets’ manufacturing date is December 2023, printed on a white label on the bottom of the wheelbarrow.
  • Appearance: The recalled long hoe and rake have distinctive yellow handles with black lettering (“Stanley Jr.”) and black metal components.

If your product matches these characteristics, it is included in the recall.

What Should I Do If I Have a Recalled Red Toolbox Product?

If you own the recalled long hoe and rake from the Stanley Jr. Kids Wheelbarrow and Garden Set, you should take the following steps:

  • Stop Using the Recalled Items Immediately: To prevent any potential safety risks, discontinue using the long hoe and rake immediately.
  • Visit the Recall Website: Go to the Red Toolbox recall page for information on obtaining a free replacement.
  • Submit Proof: You will be asked to fill out a form and upload photos showing the disposal of the long hoe and rake. Additionally, you must include a picture of the white label on the bottom of the wheelbarrow that shows the December 2023 manufacturing date.

Once your submission is processed, Red Toolbox will send a free long hoe and rake replacement.
