As a longtime homeowner and gardener, I’ve tried many different edging ideas and products. After a cut paw on sharp metal edging meant a trip to the animal hospital, I switched to using plastic. However, the plastic edging quickly became brittle and easily broke when using an edge trimmer. Luckily, when the time came to edge a new flower bed, I found EcoBorder rubber landscape edging.

As an interior designer (and green space geek), I’ve created landscape designs for clients where I look for opportunities to create flow and welcoming curves in an outdoor living space. In my humble opinion, this EcoBorder rubber landscape edging is the best way to give your lawn that polished look. Plus, I like the idea of using recycled rubber rather than another plastic product that ends up in a landfill in two years.

What is EcoBorder rubber landscape edging?

Made from recycled rubber tires, EcoBorder rubber landscape edging is eco-friendly, easy to install and doesn’t require digging. Choose among the five earth-tone colors, including black, brown, gray, green and red. The package comes with long 8-inch stakes to secure the edging to the ground, and each 4-foot piece can flex up to 70 degrees to create curves. The sections are easy to lift, flex and attach to the next piece with 3-inch plastic dowels. Designed to hold mulch, the L-shape allows you to mow close to the edge without damaging plants or the edging.

EcoBorder Rubber Landscape Edging Features

The best part of this rubber landscape edging is that it cuts down on using a string trimmer, because the lawn mower wheels can ride on the bottom edge for a close cut.  I didn’t notice any damage when I needed to use a string trimmer around it. The trimmer just bounces off the edging.

The 3-inch high-profile design is ideal for containing mulch or pebbles. The plastic stakes stay in place and are barely visible once installed. If winter heaving causes the stakes to rise, it’s easy to pound them back in. In my experience, the color has remained steadfast over the years with minimal (if any) fading.

How We Tested It

Unlike unruly plastic rolls of landscape edging, installation with EcoBorder was simple. First, I laid out the pieces to make my design and then removed some weeds, which was easily done with my CobraHead weeder. Rather than landscape fabric, I laid cardboard and wood chips over the grass so that I could fill it in with plants at a later date.

Since I was building this flower bed from scratch, I didn’t need to cut the edging. (But other shoppers have used a hacksaw, handsaw, miter box or reciprocating saw.) Compared to brick borders, these rubber sections seamlessly follow a sloping landscape without digging or tedious leveling. Although lightweight, the durability and density make installation a snap. This entire 20-foot project took me (alone) under a day to transform the look of this unkempt flower bed. What a sense of accomplishment!

Four years later, I’m still a happy gardener. The flower bed has filled in and the butterflies are happy. Now I have several other places that need tidy borders, and EcoBorder rubber landscape edging will be the only thing I’ll consider.

FAQ

How do you install a rubber landscape border?

It’s easy to imagine a curved border by using a garden hose. Just lay out the hose and start creating a design that pleases you. Then, measure the distance of edging by marking the hose, pulling it straight to measure the overall length of materials. When you receive the product, lay it on the ground to ensure everything fits. Start assembling one EcoBorder section at a time using the provided dowels. Lastly, make sure the ground is saturated enough to easily drive the stakes in.

Time-saving tip: If you want to pull out the power tools to pre-drill holes in the ground, go for it! Templates are available on the EcoBorder website.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

From over 900 reviews on Walmart’s website, the rubber landscape edging from EcoBorder has earned an average of 4.5 out of five stars.

“Have been using this for years and years, adding more as gardening areas have expanded,” shares Patricia, a verified purchaser. “I was tired of my husband cutting up my hosta leaves and flowers with the edger, and this solved the problem. Weed eaters and mowers have never damaged this border, it is so durable and lasts forever.”

John, a five-star reviewer, says, “Not a landscaper by any stretch of the imagination, but my wife and I tackled this project anyway. What an easy install!! We knocked out over 130 inches just a few hours. Really great product!! Impressed with the quality/thickness of the material, but it’s also flexible. Makes nice turns, just need to take your time and lay things out properly.”

“Sets up very quickly. We used the roll of plastic edging first, but mulch would wash away with rain. Decided on EcoBorder since it was recycled. I just butted it up against existing edging. It is a little pricey, but extremely sturdy with nice height to keep mulch in place. Definitely worth it and much cleaner lines,” writes five-star reviewer, Denise.

Final Verdict

After having the EcoBorder rubber landscape edging installed for the past four years, I stand by this product as being the best landscape edging. This edging is lightweight, easy to use and flexible. It makes beautiful curves, keeps mulch in place, is trimmer-friendly and gives a nice finish to my landscape.

A huge benefit of rubber landscape edging is the no-dig aspect. The stakes easily pull up to reconfigure the design when I’m ready to extend my flower bed. I love this adaptability feature, along with the flexibility to make curves. I also appreciate that this is a recycled product that will withstand the test of time. The brown color I chose hasn’t faded like the brown plastic pots I bought around the same time. Plus, I don’t have to worry about injuries to me or my pooch. If you’ve ever kneeled on a piece of metal edging by mistake, you know what I mean. Ouch!

There might be cheaper ways to incorporate edging into your landscape, but the durability of this product makes it a long-term solution worth the investment.
